FAQ

Why does my home need gutters?

1. PREVENT FOUNDATION PROBLEMS...
The expansion and contraction of the soil that surrounds your home is the number one reason for slab failure. After a period of rainy weather, the soil around the perimeter of your home expands as it becomes saturated with moisture. A dry, hot summer following the rain can cause the soil around your foundation to contract and pull away. As this cycle repeats, support to the foundation can be compromised leading to cracked masonry as well as sticking doors and windows. A properly designed and installed gutter system keeps the soil around your home at a consistent moisture level by directing roof runoff safely away from the house.

2. PREVENT STAINING OF MASONRY AND SIDING...
Rainwater cascading off an unguttered roof will hit the ground with enough force to cause splash back. Within this splash back are dirt, grass, and minerals that end up on the exterior of your home. Over a short period of time a stain will appear that can be difficult to remove or hide.

3. PREVENT DAMAGE TO LANDSCAPING...
Plants, flowers, mulch and soil located under the drip line of an unguttered roof can suffer form the water runoff of a thunderstorm. Additionally, this runoff can result in an over watering condition that could permit harmful fungus to develop as well as attract ants, roaches and termites.

How often should I clean and maintain my gutters?

For gutter cleaning I would say anywhere from twice a year(spring and fall) to every couple weeks depending on your tree types and coverage. Even with leafguards installed I'd check them out from time to time to keep roof debris clear and valleys free of leaves. I'd also recommend having your gutters tuned up and check out every couple years to make sure they are draining properly, due to the house settling, and check for leaking corners.

How do you know when to replace your gutters?

There are many determining factors that go into whether or not your gutters need to be replaced. Everything from old age to improper maintenance or adverse weather and falling trees can all cause damage to the existing gutter system. Our professionals can help you determine what shape and condition your gutters are in.

How should gutters be properly installed?

Gutters should be installed under the drip edge, not on top, with a hidden hanger support bracket installed generally every 2.5 feet and pitched to drain accordingly. The gutters (if applicable) should be supported to the to the roof under the shingles with a strap to prevent sagging gutters. General rule of thumb is a downspout every 30 feet, but a lot of factors go into the proper placement, such as roof size and the layout of the roof line.

How long should my gutters last?

Weather permitting and with proper maintenance a properly installed gutter system can last you upwards of 20 years.
